Jaana Vuopio finished her M.D., Ph.D. degrees at University of Helsinki in 1984 and 1987, respectively, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto in 1988-1991. Besides positions at National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL), she has gained expertise at University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Central Hospital and as visiting researcher at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta. She became specialist in clinical microbiology in 2004. Her research interests focus on molecular epidemiology of severe bacterial infections (especially streptococci), molecular events leading to carriage or spread of bacterial pathogens, and antimicrobial resistance. Her publication record includes 170 peer-reviewed publications with ca 8400 citations and 40 textbook chapters.
